Bernd Nickaes is considered one of the greatest talents of the Southwest-German music scene and one of the most interesting young saxophonists in Southwest-German area. Versatility, perfectionism and an extraordinary musical intuition characterize his style of play. Always open-minded and searching for something new to create with his instrument.
Born in 1987 in Saarbrücken, Germany, Bernd Nickaes began playing the saxophone at age 19 and gained his first musical experiences with musicians from the local jazz scene. Self-taught, he acquired the basics of his instrument. Later he continued his studies with renowned teachers such as Johannes Müller and at the Hochschule für Musik Saar . With first performances in regional jazz clubs, he quickly made a name for himself as a sideman and bandleader. Challenged and encouraged through workshops and master-classes (e.g.: with Bob Mintzer, Johannes Müller, Thorsten Skringer , Gilad Atzmon, Peter Weniger , Steffen Weber, ... ) Bernd developed an individual language on his instrument. In addition to various personal projects Bernd already drew attention to himself in collaboration with renowned national and international artists. Travelling on average 50 weekends a year, performances took the exceptional talent across Germany, France, Luxembourg and Cyprus.
In addition to his commitments as a concert & recording artist in the Pop & Jazz scene Bernd teaches young talents and is a lecturer at two music schools.
